Where Does the Name Miles Come From?

Alexander Miles received the patent for a device that automatically opened and closed elevator doors in 1887.
Reportedly, Alexander came up with this invention after his daughter, Grace, nearly died from a fall down an elevator shaft.
Miles Elevator Door and Cab is named after Alexander Miles for a few reasons. First, we wanted to honor one of the individuals who made elevators so safe for the riding public. Could you imagine if the doors didn’t open and close automatically? That’s dangerous. Second, Alexander Miles was African American and was a true trailblazer as an inventor and entrepreneur. It was very rare for an African American to be an inventor that long ago.
Alexander played an important role in the elevator industry and in the public as a whole for his invention and that’s why we honored his legacy by naming our company after him.
